The Samurai

The samurai were warriors, members of a military class that dominated Japan for several centuries. The samurai lived by the code known as Bushido, ‘the way of the warrior. They were absolutely loyal to their masters and fearless when facing the enemy. They preferred death by disembowelment (hara-kiri or seppuku) to dishonor.

In 1871 the military class was legally abolished and the 400,000 remaining samurai were given a pension and absorbed into government service or given other work. It was Yukio Mishima who was once mentioned as a possible Nobel prize winner. He tried to get a regiment of Japanese soldiers to revolt and when he failed, disemboweled himself in samurai fashion.
